Location relevance

Make a pass relevant in the real world.

When a pass is relevant nearby, a location-based message can bring it to the lock screen. One tap takes the holder straight to the pass—no hunting through their wallet.

Why it matters

Be useful at the moment the pass matters.

A relevant location gives the wallet more context around a pass. It helps membership cards, loyalty passes, offers, event tickets, and boarding passes appear at the right moment—so the holder can open the right pass in one tap instead of hunting through their wallet. For tickets and boarding passes, relevance can also be tied to the event or departure date and venue.

Nearby relevance

Help a customer notice a useful pass when they are close to a store, venue, club, or other relevant place.

A clear prompt

Add a short lock-screen message that explains why the pass may be useful in that moment.

Timed relevance

For tickets and boarding passes, make the pass relevant on the right day as well as at the right location.

Holder-controlled

The wallet and device determine whether this behaviour is available, based on their settings and the holder's permissions.

Configure in the Portal

Manage locations and messages.

See the locations attached to a design, add another when the programme grows, then set the details and message for each one from the same workspace that manages the pass experience.

  • Add a location with its address or coordinates in the Portal, or configure it through the API.
  • Write the concise lock-screen message the holder should see when the pass is relevant nearby.
  • The pass stores that relevance information; the wallet and device compare it against the holder's location.
  • PassKit does not track a holder entering a location or receive confirmation that a message was shown.

Where it fits

Use location relevance when place adds useful context.

Location relevance complements live pass updates and scheduled messaging. It is best used for a place-specific moment, not as a replacement for a broader communication plan.

Membership

Make entry simpler.

Help members surface a pass when they arrive at a club, site, or participating location.

Loyalty and offers

Support a return visit.

Make a loyalty pass or offer easier to find around a relevant retail or hospitality location.

Tickets and boarding

Support arrival and departure.

Make an event ticket or boarding pass easier to find at the relevant venue or airport on the right day.

Customer choice

Keep permissions in the holder's hands.

Location relevance depends on the wallet, device, and location permissions configured by the holder.

FAQ

Questions teams ask about location relevance.

A focused way to give a wallet pass more context around a relevant place.

Is a location message a traditional push notification?

No. The pass stores location relevance data and the wallet or device may surface the pass when it is relevant. It is not an SMS message or a conventional app push notification.

Does PassKit track a pass holder's location?

No. PassKit does not track a holder entering a configured location, know whether a location message was displayed, or receive a record of whether it was opened.

How many relevant locations can a wallet pass have?

Each Apple Wallet or Google Wallet pass can have up to 10 relevant locations. Choose the locations that are most useful for that individual pass holder.

What if our business has more than 10 locations?

You can configure thousands or hundreds of thousands of locations in PassKit. For each individual pass, choose the 10 locations most relevant to that holder. Update that selection as their relationship, location, or journey changes, and PassKit updates the existing pass.

Can a location message open an external website or app?

No. Tapping the location-relevant message opens the pass in the wallet. Use Wallet Actions or pass links when the journey needs a further destination.
